Marvin H. Johnson, Jr.
After nearly 35 years of service within the Pharmaceutical Industry, Marvin retired from Merck in the Fall of 2018. Although the vast majority of his experience was within the commercial operations side of the business, his most recent role prior to retirement was as the Chief Learning Officer for Merck’s Global Learning and Development department reporting to the EVP of Human Resources and serving on the enterprise’s Senior HR Leadership Team. Before taking on the CLO role within the organization, Marvin was Vice President of the U.S. Human Health East Commercial Operations Group for the Primary Care Sales division and prior to that, Global Brand Leader for Merck’s Migraine franchise where he successfully led product launches in various countries around the world.
Marvin has held numerous Senior Leadership roles at Merck that included responsibility within Sales, Marketing and Operational Support functions. His experience has extended across regional, national and global books of business. These responsibilities spanned across multiple therapeutic categories including Diabetes, Acute Care, Neurology, Respiratory, Cardiovascular, Pain Management and Sleep Disorders.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from the Pennsylvania State University, Marvin began his career in the pharmaceutical industry over 34 years ago as a Professional Sales Representative at Merck.
In his most recent role, Marvin led a transformational initiative to modernize Global Learning & Development and strengthen Merck’s position as a High-Performance Learning Organization by building people capabilities through relevant, continuous learning experiences that are personalize, adaptive and easy to find, consume and apply. His GL&D team was nationally recognized by the training industry for its success in evolving its operating model to deliver impactful learning solutions resulting in improved business outcomes and enhanced learner experiences.
Marvin has been happily married for over 29 years and is blessed with two sons, a daughter-in-law and is expecting his first grandchild this Spring. He enjoys reading, golf, traveling and currently serves as a board of trustee for Tabor Children’s Service and is Chairperson for the Directional Team at Covenant Presbyterian Church.
