Enhancing Cybersecurity Compliance Training Engagement with an Immersive Learning Video

Challenge

A pharmaceutical company needed to update its annual training to actively change employee behaviors related to preventing, detecting, and reporting cyberattacks. Preventing cyberattacks is an enormous priority due to the client’s vital role in providing life-saving medications worldwide.

Given the audience’s demanding schedules, the training solution needed to be both concise and highly engaging. Stakeholders within the organization wanted a highly engaging video experience that incorporated Hollywood-style techniques to serve as the main delivery method for the cybersecurity training.

The training video content is needed to instruct workers on secure data handling practices, recognizing potential security threats, and appropriately responding to potential cyberattacks by reporting suspicious messages to the IT department. The solution also needed to be accessible and relevant to the company’s global workforce and produced in various languages.

Solution

GP Strategies delivered a unique training solution that takes 30 minutes to complete and consists of 26 different eLearning content assets, 12 minutes of video, and two senior leader videos. The training program was designed to be accessible to the client’s workforce in 19 different languages and met global accessibility standards. The content was delivered within a multi-language Shareable Content Objects package, which meant all employees received the same package and could select their preferred language within the course.

This is the best training video I have seen in over 20 years, thanks for making the effort to make it interesting and engaging.

GP Strategies drew on the work of behavioral psychologist B.J. Fogg, who has done extensive work using experience design to drive behaviors, as well as GP’s own heart, head, and hand engagement model, which emphasizes the value of multi-stage engagement via emotion, logic, and practice. Additionally, the client provided designers with learning scenarios based on real events so that the video training felt authentic to learners.

The video’s story follows a cyber security expert named Patrick and two employees who have 48 hours to respond to a ransomware demand. Learners progress through each episode in sequence and follow the story through two separate timelines: one set in the present day, in which Patrick investigates the incident while racing against the clock; and a retrospective timeline, which gradually reveals the events in the weeks leading up to the breach.

The learning experience follows the characters as they face various threats and allows the learner to identify potential red flags. Story branching allows learners to direct the narrative and learn from the consequences of their actions. At each decision point, there are two questions: one that asks the learner to identify the potential problem correctly and another that requires a decision on action, such as how to avoid a breach. This approach provides learners with a safe place to make mistakes that might otherwise be very costly to the business, while tailored feedback provides learners with the information they need to make informed decisions in the future.

Additionally, the video segments of each episode are broken up by decision-point questions and on-screen learning content that encourage the learner to actively reflect on the events of each episode and to consider why the events have played out as they have and what could have been done differently.

Results

  • Over 13,000 employees completed the new training within 24 hours of the course’s launch date.
  • The course had a 98% completion rate just 45 days after it was launched and received a 4.9 out of 5-star rating on the LMS.
  • 100,000+ individuals have now completed the annual training, exceeding the 95% completion rate goal set by the client.
